Dialogue between the judiciary and the journalistic community strengthened by the project “Dialogue between the Media and the Judiciary to Enhance Transparency of Justice”
The team of the NGO “Human Rights Vector”, together with partners, actively implemented activities over the course of 8 months aimed at strengthening dialogue between the judiciary and the media, thereby making judicial topics more visible and better covered for society.
The project “Dialogue between the Media and the Judiciary to Enhance Transparency of Justice” was implemented by the NGO “Human Rights Vector” in cooperation with the Council of Judges of Ukraine, the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, with the support of The CEELI Institute (Prague). Such cooperation is an important example of collaboration between Ukrainian and international civil society with public authorities of Ukraine.
This project proved to be very intensive and reminded us how important dialogue is between representatives of the judiciary and the journalistic community, and that it is worth continuing to move towards each other.
For some, participation in such joint activities was their first experience; for others, it was an important continuation of ongoing work. We are glad that we had the opportunity to come together and exchange practices and experiences that will further support our daily work.
We would like to present you with a brief summary of the project.
During August 2025 – March 2026, together we managed to:
332 participants from courts, media, and civil society organisations took part in the dialogue meetings.
We discussed the following topics: “Needs and Challenges in Cooperation between Representatives of the Media and the Judiciary” (6 November 2025), “Court Cases: How to Find Topics and Not Get Lost in Registers and Judicial Institutions” (3 December 2025), “Victim-Oriented Approach and Conflict-Sensitive Trauma-Informed Public Communication” (offline photo report) (16 January 2026), “Courts and Media: How to Communicate about Justice in a Clear, Responsible and Socially Meaningful Way” (offline) (20 February 2026).
According to the feedback from offline meetings, 100% of participants who filled out feedback forms indicated that such events should be held in the future.
Participants also noted a wide range of topics for future meetings, including communication practices in courts, development of judicial journalism, coverage of judicial issues during wartime, legal and ethical aspects of covering court activities, the balance between freedom of speech and the right to a fair trial, the right to privacy and public interest. There was also interest in thematic areas such as gender-sensitive cases and domestic violence, interaction between judges, lawyers, and prosecutors, as well as professional resilience — including burnout prevention and working with trauma.
20 journalists participated in the mentoring programme “Justice in the Focus of Media”, and 18 of them submitted two journalistic materials each, resulting in a total of 36 articles and video materials.

During August 2025 – March 2026, together we managed to:
- conduct 4 dialogue meetings for courts and media;
- implement the mentoring programme to support journalists “Justice in the Focus of Media”, including 3 group mentoring meetings, individual oral and written consultations, and financial support;
- prepare materials to promote the mechanism of court hearings broadcasting;
- conduct a survey on communication and dialogue needs of representatives of the media and the judiciary, and prepare and present a report based on its results.
